2008 Artists in Newspapers: Week One

Beginning June 5 and continuing each week for the next 13 weeks, the Gunnison Country Times provides the venue to showcase the work of local artists varying mediums, as well as highlight some of the great events that keep locals and visitors entertained all summer long.

The Times' Artists in Newspapers series is the brainchild of Publisher Stephen J. Pierotti. His original purpose for the series was to offer a less-traditional approach to showcase the talent of the Gunnison Valley. From June 5 through Aug. 28 you can find photography, graphic design and painting -- among other mediums.

AiN kicks off with a featured piece made specifically for the series by Benjamin Dennee. A Times employee, Dennee specializes in what he calls "hack art." As an avid Adobe Photoshop user, he wanted to show that the program can be used for more than just swapping heads on photos.

The premise of the piece is to show that art is more than just a painting on a wall. It can encompass the gamut of stimuli ... an appropriate beginning to a series created for and by the artist -- no matter what the art.
